Average used car values at auction reach record levels

The average value of a used car rose by 3.8% to £8,001, according to the latest BCA Pulse report. Values are now 13.6% higher than a year ago.

Simon Henstock, BCA UK operations director said the increased supplies of used vehicles in late September generated by the plate change could lead to a softening of values.

“With the plate change now in full swing, we expect volumes to rise from late-September onwards and this traditionally exerts some pressure on average values and conversion rates.

“Poorly presented and damaged vehicles might begin to struggle, however, and if the market conditions tighten then these vehicles will need to be competitively priced to stimulate interest.”

Henstock said the challenge for dealers was to source ready to retail vehicles.
