New car sales were up 6.2 per cent in June to 228,291 units, while commercial vehicle registrations grew 25.5 per cent, according to latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
More than 1,287,265 new cars were registered in the first six months of the year – a 10.6 per cent rise on the same period in 2013, and the best half-year total since 2005. Of these, 663,625 were fleet and business sales, which marks a 7 per cent increase on 2013, and means that non-private registrations accounted for 52 per cent of all new car registrations for the year to date. The van market has maintained its impressive growth, with registrations up 33.3 per cent in June, though truck sales continue their ongoing decline, down 19.2 per cent on June 2013.
